40 is the New 20…Yeah Right!

I saw a post the other day that made me chuckle – something I could totally identify with.

“If I wake up pain-free, I would think I was dead.”
40 is the New 20

After 22 years of military service this is my story. When I wake up it’s a beautiful symphony of snap, crackle and pops. Movement is slow to allow my joints, muscles, tendons and eyes time to catch up with my mind.

I think about those 22 years of PT – running, jumping, squatting, push-ups, sit-ups, flutter kicks, and so many more moves – all done with ease of motion. I was not a PT stud by any stretch of the imagination but I gave my all on the PT test – to point of throwing up and total exhaustion.

I think about those 22 years of Training – ruck marches, Army Schools, field exercises, and the lack of sleep that comes with this part of being a Soldier. I shudder when I think about how hard I pushed myself in training – then I am slowly bought back to reality when I feel a tweak in my back from an ‘old Army injury.’ I showed that guy I could carry that machine gun during leadership training. Yeah, I showed him alright – I couldn’t even stand up by the time we reached our field site. Now I see a chiropractor on a regular basis.

40-is-the-New-20-Veterans-coach-lila-holleyYeah, I can definitely relate to that post. But you know what, I wouldn’t trade the experiences of those 22 years for all the pain-free mornings in the world. I pushed myself and I proved to MYSELF:
1. I am strong
2. I am able
3. I am a leader
4. I am a team player
5. I am a Soldier – and damn proud of that!
